that commentator is a bit condescending in my opinion, but he's an american, and his sense of superiority is apparently part of the package. i'd better shut up before a lawyer contacts my tail.

that's why i will not flash any olympic logos here. but i can toss links your way. they only gave us a few millisecs in the grand march (and we are supposed to be americans too, you know... what's up nbc???)

but the u.s. virgin islands has an olympic committee and we are proud of our stars.

president barack obama!
i bet you are wondering why this is not on the 'nation' page. because barack obama is the world's president. he has the perspective and temperament to deal with a broad range of people, which is quite rare. he believes in respecting people whose culture and insight are different. i don't get that feeling from the current president, nor from his would-be successor (party-wise). in a world where the push of a button could mean sure death for millions, it's time we re-think our swagger and bluster. there's a lot of ground to cover, but i think we can join the rest of the world and pull our selves towards a more peaceful existence.

barack obama. his dad was black, his mom was white, and he was raised by a white family in a multi-cultural environment. he is not our black president. he is america's president. the day when we can get away from describing our president in terms of skin color, we will have come a long way.

*rant* isn't it ironic, that south africa, on emerging from apartheid, was able to elect a president of african descent, but the united states of america, a country where civil rights for blacks were won decades ago, still lolls around lamenting over whether 'the country will elect a black president'. we are so superficial and full of ourselves as a people. we have the luxury of being so powerful, but we have no humility. we need to look around and see that we are all human beings who want happiness, joy and success for those who will come after us. it's time to join the human race. *end rant* 07/20/08

where's natalee?
natalee holloway disappeared from a group of high school students on a trip to aruba several weeks ago, and the nation has been looking for her ever since. as suspects make like they're in a revolving door in the aruban justice system, the trail grows colder. two hapless security guards were the first to be scooped up into the dragnet, but when it was determined that the basis of their being the focus was predicated on a lie by others, the switcheroo was on and the liars ended up behind bars. then, a pal joined them. then, the father of one of the liars joined them all. then, the pal and the father were released.

will we ever find her? will we ever know the truth? as always, someone knows what went on, and it may be someone who is completely removed from the situation that witnessed something untoward on the day of or in the days since natalee's disapearance. natalee's mother, beth, asserts that she is not leaving aruba without her daughter. i hope that she is found. i hope that all of the missing are found. there are so many missing, so many who do not get the big headlines because their families do not have the means or the connections to pull the media along on their search. go to the national center for missing and exploited children and the fbi missing persons web site, bookmark them, and see some faces that you will probably never see on cnn, abc, fox, cbs, or nbc. they left holes in their worlds too. and they need you, now. 06/27/05

the pope
i am nowhere near catholic, but i can appreciate the grief that envelopes millions as the pope passed out of this life. he was a people's pope. he was definite and he adored what he did. he died with his boots on. i could do without his tucking away bernard cardinal law, the infamous alleged champion of priests accused of sexual abuse during the scandal years.04/07/05

doc scott takes his leave...
wow. dr. gene scott has passed on. i don't know what will happen with the teaching, but i do know that he left so many great programs that the archives alone will provide a wealth of knowledge for years to come... 02/02/05

the doc is in...
a friend let me know where i could once again be assailed night and day by the gritty teachings of one dr. gene scott! i used to listen to him a long time ago. his church gathers every sunday in a california university of his own devising, and he holds audiences the world over spellbound with his unorthodox takes on the... well, orthodox! if you're hypersensitive about your beliefs and don't intend to learn anything about anyone else's lest a new thought take root, don't listen. all others can visit drgenescott.com and find out how to get yours 12.12.04

a day in hollywood...
no dice in the ukraine. the viktors yanukovych and yushchenko slug it out over iffy election results in the the runoffs held recently. happy to see that the dissention did not result in bloodshed. come to think of it, the united states went through a hotly contested election in 2000 (who could forget it?) and one testament to our resiliency as a nation was the fact that we did not take to the streets with fisticuffs in mind. ah, civilization! 11.28.04

frances marches on...
hurricane frances barely kissed the shores of the u.s. virgin islands before she set her sights on larger prey: the state of florida. she had to get through the island networks of turks and caicos and the bahamas first.

easy work for a cat-4 storm, unfortunately. as the islands are set to reeling, florida battens down and evacuates potential hot spots. florida cannot take another hit the likes of what charley dealt, but we are not in control here. 09.02.04

zeus has left the building...
the olympics are finally over. the men had their heads handed to them in basketball, the women redeemed our good name beneath the hoops. beach volleyball entertainers were lambasted for their skimpy costumes, while the players themselves sported little more than tankinis...

mia hamm had her day while paul hamm fought off a south korean protest... marion jones had her share of high and low points, while the ubiquitous bob costas put in tons of overtime. aside from one or two skirmishes, nobody got hurt. hope they sold lots of baklava!!! 08.28.04

i don't wanna talk about it...
so i shant... 06.18.04

well, blow me down...
it's hurricane season come june 1, 2004, and the killjoys at colorado state university issue their annual listing of tropical threats. well, somebody's gotta be the bearer of bad news. let's not nuke the messenjah, but be prepared! visit the colorado state u. page with the potential storms, news releases and information you'll need...

this memorial day, law and order will be on the air for 12 thrilling hours on the tnt network. blimey, i love that show! 12 solid hours of *donk, donk*!!! 05.28.04

that's one...
ok, i'm spending a lot of time on iraq here. i'm going to change that after this entry. at least i hope so. anyhoo, i must now admit that i located and viewed the berg beheading video. out of morbid curiosity. turns out people are saying that there is no way that this could have been an actual slaughter, as they believe that mr. berg was already dead when the actual decapitation took place. doctors weigh in as to the amount of gore that would ordinarily be present, video experts state that the scream appears to be a bad overdub of a woman's voice. and get this: the slaughterers appear to be too fat to be iraqi militants (yep, that's what they say!).

in the meantime, sarin gas was found in an artillery round, and the "weapons of mass destruction" debate takes on a glint of verity. keep the pin near the bubble, because it could have been an old one from the days when saddam was killing the kurdish rebels, their families and friends after we left them to fend for themselves the first time...

meanwhile (and to change the subject!), they say that actress gwyneth paltrow recently had a baby which she promptly named "Apple"... 05.18.04

*your brain's in it...
well, that'll show us. iraqi militants lop off the head of an american civilian who was trying to get home one more time. the video posted for all the world to see by a web site and a few news outlets. dunno how long you'll be able to check it out; it's supposed to be pretty grisly. i saw the daniel pearl video, and i am not interested in seeing this one. the family is devastated at the voyeuristic tendencies that are bound to be ticked by this clip as they attempt to find some peace in this maelstrom
[*sick ode to king obstinate, as in "don't loooose your head..."] 05.11.04

sorry, but...
this thing is getting so out of hand. iraqi detainees compared their treatment at the hands of overly zealous americans who humiliated and beat them as being worse than saddam. huh?

i'm sure it's bad, but it cannot be as bad as saddam. on the other hand, there's just no justification for what those u.s. soldiers are alleged to have done. especially when a reported 60% of the detainees turn out to be innocent! 05.03.04
